Tips for Losing Stomach Fat

Of all the fat that we carry around on our bodies stomach fat probably has the largest negative effect on our health. Not only that but if you have excess stomach fat it can make you feel unattractive and like you are not sexy...not to mention uncomfortable! It's no wonder you want to lose stomach fat. When it comes to getting rid of stomach fat there are a few things you should know.

First, most people make the mistake of thinking that the key to getting rid of stomach fat is to do lots and lots of sit-ups or crunches. Actually, though, doing sit-ups, crunches or any exercises that target just the stomach area is not going to help you get rid of the excess fat around your stomach. The reason is that because of how our bodies are designed it is not possible to just target one area where we want to lose fat. In order to lose fat from your stomach you need to drop your overall body fat percentage. Let's take a quick look at why that is.

When your body stores fat, it stores it in the most efficient way possible. That means that it stores it on a part of your body where it is easy for you to carry it. Imagine if your body stored the excess fat on your ankles - that wouldn't be too efficient. However, by storing the fat in the middle area of your body like on your hips, thighs, butt or stomach, you can still move around easily but your body has the extra fat in reserve to provide energy if you need it.

Anytime you have excess fat in your body it is going to get stored away in one of these areas. Likewise, anytime you lose excess fat from your body it is going to come from one of these areas. That means that if you store your excess fat in your stomach area, when you drop the overall body fat percentage of your body it will disappear from the area where it is store - your stomach.

When you do sit ups and crunches you may build up your stomach muscles underneath the fat, but you don't burn off the fat that is covering them. Instead you just have really great abs hidden away under a layer of fat.

Rather than focusing on stomach exercises, you should focus your efforts on losing body fat. The key to this is to incorporate strength training into your workouts to help you build muscle. Having extra muscle in your body will boost your metabolism and help you to burn fat more effectively. Along with strength training you should incorporate cardio several times a week to burn even more calories during your workout. Finally, you should focus on eating a diet geared specifically toward losing fat rather than losing weight. A fat loss diet will help you to give your muscles the energy they need while helping you to drop fat quickly. You can check out the top fat loss diets here:
